IT'S OCTOBER WHEN EVERYTHING TURNS PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the U.S. (other than skin cancer). Each year more than 192,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Education and early detection are important keys to survival.
Monthly self breast exams play an important role in early detection. A lump is generally the size of a pea before it can be felt. See your healthcare provider (HCP) if anything is suspected. Your HCP will perform a clinical breast exam by using the pads of fingers to feel for lumps over the entire breast, underarm, and collarbone area. Your HCP will feel its size, shape, texture, and if it moves easily. Further tests will be ordered to diagnose the problem.
Mammograms (an x-ray of the breast) are the most common diagnostic tool to detect breast cancer. Mammograms can often show a breast lump before it can be felt. Before symptoms, women in their 40s and older should get mammograms every 1-2 years. Women under 40 with risk factors should discuss having a mammogram with ther HCP.
If breast cancer is diagnosed, there are many treatment options and treatment is as individual as the patient. Options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy. Surgery and radiation are local therapy. Chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy are systemic therapies. Treatment depends on several factors such as the stage of the cancer and the overall health of the patient.
People's Custom Rx welcomes all opportunities to partner with you and your family for the best quality of life possible.
